Abstract:

This is an industry based subject based on the Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT®) industry certification established by the IT Governance Institute (ITGITM) (www.itgi.org).

COBIT is an IT governance framework and supporting toolset that allows managers to bridge the gap between control requirements, technical issues and business risks. COBIT enables clear policy development and good practice for IT control throughout organisations to increase the value attained from IT, enables alignment and simplifies implementation of the COBIT framework.

Available only to students in Master of Business Administration (Computing).

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to detail how to achieve better alignment, based on a business focus;
- be able to present a view, understandable to management, of what IT does;
- be able to demonstrate how to achieve clear ownership and responsibilities, based on process orientation;
- be able to detail the process required to achieve general acceptability with their parties and regulators;
- be able to detail the steps required to achieve a shared understanding amongst all stakeholders, based on a common language;
- be able to demonstrate what is required to achieve fulfilment of the COSO requirements for the IT control environment.

The subject will cover the following topics:

- How IT management issues affect organisations.
- The principles of IT Governance.
- How IT Governance helps address IT management issues.
- Who should be responsible for IT governance;
- The need for a control framework driven by the need for IT Governance;
- How CobiT meets the requirement for an IT Governance Framework.
- How CobiT is used with other standards and best practices.
- The CobiT Framework and all the components of CobiT (Control Objectives, Control Practices, Management Guidelines, Assurance Guide).
- How to apply CobiT in a practical situation.
- The benefits of using CobiT.
- The products and support that ITGI provides.
