Abstract:

Managing Yourself and Others is designed to develop your competencies in managing yourself and working with other people. The subject deals with self awareness, self management and self development. It introduces interpersonal skills critical to effective communication such as good listening, assertiveness, negotiation and conflict resolution; and, incorporates group effectiveness and group facilitation.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* be able to demonstrate understanding of and identify their learning styles and ways to develop a balanced style;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of and design a program to manage stress;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of techniques for developing creativity;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of barriers to effective communication and ways to overcome them;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of deficiencies in supportive communication skills and how they can be overcome;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of effective methods of conflict resolution;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of effective strategies for successful negotiation;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of how to use this knowledge in the work environment;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of the differences between effective and ineffective groups;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of methods to effectively manage group relationships and group tasks;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of procedures to improve group effectiveness;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of effective group decision making processes;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of effective group facilitation processes.
