Abstract:
This subject studies recent developments in the Asia-Pacific region and their implications for international business. A thematic approach is used to analyse economic systems, political systems and business culture in the region. Case studies provide detailed analysis of issues and problems in several countries. Australia's changing role in the region is assessed.

The subject will cover the following topics:
- An overview of the geo-politics of the region.
- A comparative analysis of economic systems, with reference to market economies, command economies and mixed economies.
- Political systems and their implications for international business.
- Business culture: doing business in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Newly industrialising countries.
- The economic giants: Japan and China.
- Economic cooperation in the region:
- Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN)
- Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC).
- The role of the United States
- Australia's place in the region, at present and in the short to medium term future.
- Commercial opportunities and challenges.
