Abstract:

This is a capstone subject. Successful completion of the assignments will require that students draw on material and concepts studied in prior subjects. The subject focuses on the strategic planning function in an organisation. There is consideration of the audit of the organisation's internal resources and of the external factors which impact upon strategic decision making. The formulation of strategic alternatives which mesh with the organisations current environment and then selection of the most effective are also examined. The implementation of strategic plans and their evaluation is the final section.

Enrolment restrictions:

Students are advised not to attempt this subject unless they have successfully completed three (3) second level Bachelor of Business subjects. Equivalent prerequisite subject for former students of the University of Sydney, Orange Campus is RMMN1754 Management II or RMMN1157 Introduction to Management. Not available to students who have completed RMMN3760.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- appreciate the techniques and processes involved in business policy
- apply the techniques in practical situations
- critically evaluate the techniques used
- use the knowledge and competencies gained in prior subjects in an integrated fashion.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- An introduction to the study of policy formulation - The corporate mission and goals or objectives - Internal resource audits - Assessment of the external environment - Strategy evaluation and development - Strategy implementation - Business decision-making in the areas of production, marketing, finance, and human resource management in a competitive environment
