MGT571 Contemporary Management Practice (8)

Abstract:

This subject examines the theory and practice of management. A number of classical and contemporary theoretical approaches are discussed, with emphasis given to exploration of contemporary management practices and the challenges of managing in the 21st century. IT professionals / managers will be exposed to a range of issues related to the general management discipline, such as: the structure and dynamics of classical and new organisational forms; leadership issues; small group decision making; and, personality differences and conflict resolution. The subject also addresses management issues associated with innovation, change and development, and managing in a global context.

Available only to students in Master of Management(IT(Articulated Set); Master of Project Management (Articulated Set); Master of Business Administration (Computing); Graduate Certificate in Account Management.

Not available to students who have completed MBA501 and MGT501 .

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* be able to analyse and write critically about the diverse practices of management;
* be able to apply the new knowledge gained in the subject to the day-to-day operations of the workplace;
* be able to critically evaluate and apply the management and organisational theories addressed in the subject;
* be able to demonstrate understanding of the manager's role in relation to organisation change and broader society;
* be able to critically evaluate the manager's role in relation to organisation change and broader society;
* be able to use a variety of theories to identify, analyse and evaluate key issues, opportunities and problems faced by the manager in the IT industry; and
* be able to critically examine the current state of management and organisational theory and practice, and their relevance and applicability to the IT industry/ environment.
