Abstract:

This subject aims to develop the student's understanding of the complications that may arise during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal/newborn period; and to plan, implement and evaluate midwifery cares based on the knowledge gained from studying this subject and from midwifery practice.

Enrolment restrictions:

Students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery or Registered Midwives undertaking the Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) only.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

1. be able to recognise and act within own knowledge base and scope of practice
2. be able to demonstrate knowledge of the range of physical, social and emotional changes that occur during a complicated pregnancy and how these changes may affect the woman
3. be able to plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care when the woman experiences non-life threatening complications within the antenatal, labour, birth, postnatal/neonatal period
4. be able to plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care in response to emergency situations within the antenatal, labour, birth, postnatal/neonatal period
5. be able to assess, plan, provide and evaluate safe and effective midwifery care for the woman and/or baby with complex needs
6. be able to demonstrate knowledge of applied pharmacology and functions in accordance with legislation and common law affecting midwifery practice
7. be able to consult with, and refer to, another midwife or appropriate health care provider when the needs of the woman and her baby fall outside own scope of practice or competence
8. be able to develop effective strategies to implement and support collaborative midwifery practice
9. be able to collaborate with, and refers women to, appropriate community agencies and support networks
10. be able to promote safe and effective midwifery care

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Module 1: Care of the sick neonate * Support for parents of the sick neonate; * Neonatal resuscitation * Conditions in the neonate and applied pharmacology. Care of the infant with complex needs eg. respiratory and cardiac, infections, jaudice, glycaemic assessment and low birth weight newborns * Admission, transfer and discharge planning. Module 2: Care of the woman experiencing emergency and complex situations during pregnancy, labour/birth and/or the postpartum period and applied pharmacology. This includes, for example maternal resuscitation, hypertensive and endocrinological disorders; fetal malpresentations, complex situations and labour and birthing emergencies; postnatal haemorrhage, infections, depression and psychosis.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.

Five days of theoretical information and clinical practice within a simulated environment in relation to care of the woman experiencing a complex pregnancy, labour, birth, postpartum and care of the sick infant. Compulsory for Postgraduate Diploma of Midwifery students. Optional for Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) students.
