Abstract:
This subject provides the student with the opportunity to explore topics such as evidence-based midwifery practice, the sociology of midwifery, cultural safety, security and humility when supporting the woman identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or from a culturally and linguistically diverse background. Teenage pregnancy and complementary therapies will be examined and students will be encouraged to apply this knowledge to their practice as a midwife.

Enrolment restrictions:
Available to students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma of Midwifery course as a compulsory subject. Available to registered midwives employed in a maternity unit and who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) program.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1. be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care and support
2. be able to accept accountability and responsibility for own actions within midwifery practice
3. be able to address the impact of personal beliefs and experiences on the provision of midwifery care
4. be able to recognise the specific needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their communities
5. be able to provide culturally sensitive, safe and secure midwifery care for the pregnant woman who is adolescent, identifies as an Indigenous Australian or being from a culturally and/or linguistically diverse background
6. be able to communicate information to facilitate decision making by women, engaging the services of and working effectively with a professional interpreter as required
7. be able to define evidence based practice and discuss its rationale for midwifery practice
8. be able to use research effectively to inform midwifery practice
9. be able to discuss and critique midwifery and obstetric research, demonstrating an understanding of evidence-based practice
10. be able to critically appraise the use of complementary therapies in midwifery practice.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
* Evidence-base to woman-centred midwifery practice. * Midwifery sociology. * Cultural safety, security and humility (woman-led midwifery care when the woman identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or being from a culturally and linguistically diverse background). * Teenage pregnancy. * Complementary therapies.
