Abstract:
This subject provides a structure for candidates to work as reflective practitioners within the collaborative, pastorally oriented settings of Christian ministry. Outcomes of this subject are determined by the nature of the research projects being developed and are negotiated on an individual basis between students and supervisors. Projects are likely to be critical investigations of a particular approach to an identified pastoral issue in a nominated area of practice, undertaken in order to understand thoroughly its strengths and weaknesses. A detailed exploration of techniques relevant to the research topic is developed by candidates through reflection-in-action cycles in their own field of ministry.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to critically investigate identified issues in the professional practice of Christian Ministry
- be able to demonstrate a higher order skill in theological reflection on the these identified issues in the professional practice of Christian Ministry
- be able to articulate an advanced understanding of the strengths and weaknesses involved in these identified issues
- be able to demonstrate a higher order skill in research through the development of reflection-in-action cycles in their field of professional ministry.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Topics will be negotiated with the student's supervisors on an individual basis. Indicative projects are: a critical investigation of a specific pastoral issue in a nominated area of practice, in order to thoroughly understand its strengths and weaknesses; a detailed exploration of a technique or techniques relevant to the research topic (for example a reflective practitioner study of styles of caring in pastoral visitation). It is expected that the work produced will include a detailed study of trends and developments in outcomes-based evaluation procedures.
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
The residential will provide a face-to-face opportunity for reflection, discussion and development of the student's understanding of the role of the reflective practitioner within collaborative, pastorally oriented settings of Christian ministry. Students will interact with peers and supervisors in the development of their project topic within their nominated area of practice, and they will explore techniques relevant to the advancement of their research topic.
