MIS211 Imaging Pathology 1 (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Medical Radiation Science (MEDRA)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

This subject introduces students to basic principles, terminology and aetiology of pathology by giving a fundamental understanding and appreciation of the causes and mechanisms associated with the development of disease. It also provides a basic understanding of various systemic disease processes underlying the use and application of medical imaging examinations and therapeutic (radioisotope based) regimes. Emphasis is placed on image appearance of relevant pathologies.

+ Subject Availability Modes and Locations

No offerings have been identified for this subject in 2013.Continuing students should consult the SAL for current offering details prior to contacting their course coordinator: MIS211

Where differences exist between the handbook and the SAL, the SAL should be taken as containing the correct subject offering details.

Enrolment restrictions:

Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Imaging) students and Bachelor of Applied Science (Nuclear Medicine Technology) students only

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Utilise basic disease terminology, and be familiar with classifications and methods used to identify disease;
Demonstrate an understanding of the effect of disease on both a microscopic and macroscopic level, including the body defence mechanisms of immunity, inflammation and repair;
Discuss, using appropriate terminology:
- theories of carcinogenesis and biological effects of neoplasms;
- common manifestations of cardio-vascular system diseases, including circulatory disturbances;
- haematopoietic system disturbances;
- common manifestations of lymphatic system disease;
- common manifestations of reproductive system disease;
- common manifestations of skeletal system disease;
Explain the aetiology and pathogenesis of various diseases as examples of the above systems disorders eg AIDS, Diabetes Mellitus, Arterio-Sclerosis, etc.; and
Be familiar with the effects the above pathological processes have on radiological appearances (using a variety of imaging and non-imaging modalities).
