Abstract:

This subject introduces and familiarises the student with the techniques and protocols utilised in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and physics and principles of MRI in clinical practice. It also introduces and considers quality assurance, relevant regulations, department planning and magnetic and RF hazards.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- demonstrate an understanding of the physics and principles of magnetic resonance imaging.
- explain the basic MRI pulse sequences including 2D, 3D and flow motion.
- demonstrate an understanding of the spatial encoding used in MRI.
- demonstrate an understanding of and be able to implement and assess a basic quality assurance program for MRI. In addition, be aware of and be able to make basic quality control tests and measurements.
- explain the issues in MRI regarding relevant regulations, radiation safety considerations and department planning.
- describe and justify the examination techniques and protocols used in magnetic resonance imaging examinations.
- describe the imaging protocol and technique implications of the major modifications with respect to contrast media used in imaging examinations.
- identify normal anatomical structures and alignment, and common pathological and traumatic conditions, as may be demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging.
- describe and justify the imaging protocols and alternative techniques used in trauma magnetic resonance imaging imaging.
- identify and demonstrate an understanding of the discipline areas of ethics, legal issues and professionalism.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

physics and principles of magnetic resonance imaging MRI pulse sequences and spatial encoding magnetic resonance imaging instrumentation magnet and RF shielding requirements capabilities and specifications of magnetic resonance imaging quality assurance and quality control programs in magnetic resonance imaging Australian regulations / standards, magnetic and RF safety considerations and department planning relevant to MRI examination techniques and protocols used in MRI examinations contrast media and uses in MRI examinations normal anatomical and common pathological as may be demonstrated by MRI ethics, legal and professionalism issues in MRI
