Duration: Two sessions

Abstract:

This subject considers topics such as professionalism, ethics, medico-legal issues and communication in the health care field. It introduces students to the basic responsibilities of the health care professional. It also considers the differential access and distribution of health care both within and between communities. The subject takes a multi-disciplinary perspective of medical radiation science and provides a structured introduction to the practical aspects of the clinical environment. Basic techniques related to chest x-ray and the bone scan will be covered.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- Understand and correctly use appropriate terminology.
- Be able to define key terms and concepts.
- Demonstrate elementary skills in the use of diagnostic imaging techniques and be able to apply the basic principles involved in producing a chest x-ray and a bone scan.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic professional aspects of x-ray, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, ultrasound and their sub-specialisations.
- Be able to discuss, at a basic level, concepts of health, disability and medical radiation science.
- Critically discuss, at an introductory level, the various service delivery models used in health in Australia.
- Explain, at an introductory level, the processes of clinical reasoning and evidence based practice.
- Describe, at an introductory level, common social, physical, political and environmental factors that can influence health and disease.
- Demonstrate developing skills in communication within the health setting.
- Describe at an introductory level the roles of allied health professions, within the multidisciplinary team and as independent practitioners.
- Demonstrate developing professional skills within a multidisciplinary team and as independent practitioners;
- Understand and correctly apply basic concepts in health law and ethics.
- Demonstrate attitudes and skills that enhance and promote citizenship in local and professional communities;
- Appreciate and demonstrate those characteristics that enhance autonomous and life long learning.
- Commence the establishment of critical, analytical, and evaluative skills in a range of contexts including clinical problem solving, research and empirical practice, and academic and professional discourse.
- Have a general understanding of the basic principles, regulations and application relating to safe professional practice.
- Demonstrate, at a basic level, an ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients in the clinical environment.
- Demonstrate competencies required for rudimentary level chest radiograph and bone scintigraphy;
- Demonstrate an ability to utilise principles of reflective practice to address self-learning needs.
