Abstract:
This subject considers the normal surface and gross anatomical relationships of the major skeletal and soft tissue structures of the head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis and limbs. The normal imaging appearance of the structures, and their relationships, as demonstrated in the para-coronal, para-sagittal and transverse planes on plain and contrast radiographic, CT, MRI images and where appropriate co-registration with physiological imaging (SPECT and PET), is considered in detail.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to recognise and identify the normal appearance of the anatomical structures of each region as demonstrated by: plain radiography, contrast radiography, CT scanning, MRI scanning including paediatrics.
- Be able to locate, recognise and describe anatomical surface landmarks and relate these to the normal anatomical relationships of the structures of each region.
- Be able to describe, using appropriate diagrams, the normal anatomical relationships of the major structures, including skeletal, organ, major muscle and vascular structures, of each region.
- Be able to recognise and describe anatomical variants on co-registered physiological images (SPECT and PET).
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Surface anatomy: head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, upper and lower limbs. - Gross anatomical relationships: para-coronal, para-sagittal and transverse planes in the head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, upper and lower limbs. - Image modalities: plain radiography, contrast radiography, CT scanning, MRI scanning, SPECT and PET.
