Abstract:

This subject explores pathology as it relates to the medical radiation sciences. The subject covers the major pathologies encountered in the clinical practice of diagnostic imaging modalities and provides an examination of aetiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and patient management.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- Understand and correctly use appropriate terminology.
- Have an appreciation of the structure and function of the human body as it relates to relevant pathology.
- Be able to define key terms and concepts.
- Be able to explain pathogenesis of imaging related pathologies and relate this to procedural requirements of imaging modalities.
- Be able to describe aetiology, epidemiology and patient management options for imaging related pathologies.
- Have a developed knowledge of pathological processes as they relate to the imaging sciences.
- Have a general understanding of the relationship between the construction and investigation of a differential diagnosis with respect to diagnostic imaging procedures.
- Have a general understanding of the social, ethical, legal and cultural issues relating to pathologies.
- Appreciate and demonstrate those characteristics that enhance autonomous and life long learning.
- Continue the development of critical, analytical, and evaluative skills in a range of contexts including: clinical problem solving, research and empirical practice, and academic and professional discourse.
- Continue the development of effective communication skills in a variety of settings using a variety of media.
