MTH105 Introductory Mathematics (8)
CSU Discipline Area: Mathematics and Statistics (MASTA)

Abstract:
This subject is designed for students who enter university without a strong background in mathematics and who are planning to enrol in subjects requiring basic numeracy skills such as science, finance, primary teaching, computing and information technology. The subject reinforces calculation skills, basic algebra, working with formulae and applications of exponential and logarithmic functions.

Assumed Knowledge:
Mathematics to at least the level of secondary general mathematics.
Enrolment restrictions:
Students who have completed MTH101 may not enrol in MTH105 .
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to carry out calculations and use algebra accurately;
- Be able to plot and interpret graphs;
- Be able to use exponential, logarithm, and trigonometric functions in applications;
- Be able to calculate the sums of arithmetic and geometric series and use them in simple financial calculations;
- Be able to use vectors in scientific applications.
- Be able to use basic rules of differentiation and calculate derivatives of simple functions;
- Be able to interpret and write about applications of mathematics in their field of study;
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Use of calculator, significant figures, scientific notation;
- Algebra;
- Geometry, measurement, the SI system of units;
- Graphs and functions;
- Linear regression;
- Arithmetic and geometric series;
- Mathematical finance - simple and compound interest; loans and annuities;
- Logarithms and exponential functions;
- Growth and decay, logarithmic graphs;
- Trigonometry and vectors.
- Calculus - the derivative and its applications;
