Abstract:
This subject deals has a strong nursing emphasis and presents health from a holistic perspective, rather than a medical one, focussing on diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The subject examines how stress affects physical health and the body's mechanism to adapt to the stress. Technology and its impact on health are critically analysed.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
discuss the purpose of nursing assessment;
describe the purpose of taking a nursing history;
describe the purpose of a physical examination;
explain the concepts of stress and adaptation;
predict some of the possible effects of stressors and their related disturbances upon the health of the individual;
describe interventions that will prevent and minimise stressors;
discuss methods to promote the adaptive mechanisms of the individual and family;
discuss and describe innovations in health technology and the impact of these on health outcomes and service delivery.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1 - Health assessment Health assessment; health history; physical assessment; auscultation; palpation percussion. Module 2 - Adaptation, stress and coping Definitions and theory of stress; adaptation, stress and coping; physiological and psychological responses to stressors; assessment of coping and adaptation; Roys adaptation nursing model; application of adaptation theory; stress reduction measures. Module 3 - The impact of technology Technology; Critical analysis of effects technology can have on health.
