Abstract:

This subject is the 30 hour theoretical component of nursing practice. This subject is based on Primary Health Care as an organising framework. Students undertaking this subject will therefore develop a comprehensive understanding of primary health care principles and philosophy and its implications for nursing.

Enrolment restrictions:

Enrolment in this subject is restricted to HSC Year 12 students who have completed Stage One (TAFE component) Year 11 nursing course.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

1. to be able to discuss concepts of health and differences in perceptions for individuals, families and communities.
2. to be able to discuss Primary Health Care philosophy and principles and apply the principles of primary health care in nursing practice.
3. to be able to examine the concepts of social justice and equity in primary health care, and demonstrate cultural safety.
4. to be able to discuss primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and health care contexts and implications for the nursing role.
5. to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles that underpin the concepts of critical thinking and reflection and significance of these concepts to nursing.
6. to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles that underpin the concepts of planning, problem solving and decision making and significance of these concepts to nursing.
7. to be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of the skills required to find evidence through research.
8. to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the roles and functions of the inter-professional health care team.
9. to be able to demonstrate an understanding and application, at a beginning level, of the principles of formal academic writing.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

1. The Nature of Health: (a) Exploration of concepts of health, community and culture (b) Social determinants of health (c) Community health and community development 2. Primary Health Care philosophy and framework: (a) Primary, secondary and tertiary levels of prevention and health care 3. Social Justice and Equity in Primary Health Care: (a) Application of social justice and equity principles within the Primary Health Care model for specific groups of people (i) Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples (ii) Ageing population (iii) People with disabilities (iv) Peoples from different cultures (v) Inland peoples (vi) Women 4. Professionalism and Primary Health Care: (a) Advocacy (b) Respect (c) Cultural safety (d) Empowerment (e) Facilitation (f) Partnerships with individuals, groups and communities 5. Ways of knowing: (a) Generic attributes of Charles Sturt University with particular focus on: (i) Academic skills (ii) Numeracy and Literacy (iii) Critical thinking (iv) Technological literacy (v) Active research consumption (b) Application of evidence to theory, reflection, critique and practice
