Abstract:
This subject is the practical component of nursing practice. This subject is based on Primary Health Care as an organising framework. Students will implement a collaborative health promotion/health education project that demonstrates application of the principles of primary health care throughout the lifespan. Students undertaking this subject will undertake 60 hours clinical practice in a variety of community, residential, schools or seniors settings in a supernumerary capacity under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Enrolment in this subject is restricted to HSC Year 12 students who have completed Stage One (TAFE component) Year 11 nursing course.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1. to be able to discuss health promotion and education in primary health care.
2. to be able to perform a needs assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a program in the community.
3. to be able to implement primary health care initiatives in the community and/or hospitals.
4. to be able to provide group facilitation in promoting health.
5. to be able to discuss the principles of health promotion in teaching patients skills to promote self-care and self-management.
6. to be able to describe the role of the media in primary health care.
7. to be able to discuss the use of health information in primary health care and the impact on health outcomes.
Syllabus:

Operationalising Primary Health Care (a) Role of Nursing in Primary Health Care context (i) Nursing and health promotion/education groups * needs assessment - individual, family and community * planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion/education activities * Promotion of self-care (ii) Role in policy development and implementation (b) Role of nursing in the secondary health care context (i) Nursing care implications * Health screening * Health challenges * Secondary prevention (c) Role of nursing in the tertiary health care context (i) Nursing implications * Health optimisation * Tertiary prevention (d) Safe nursing practice (i) Scope of nursing practice (ii) Reflective thinking in practice.
