Abstract:

This subject considers organisational behaviour and organisational methodology in health systems from a managerial viewpoint. It examines the application of the major theories of organisational management to the nursing health sector and allows the student to analyse and synthesise selected management theory from a critical perspective.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

identify an organisational structure;
analyse and redesign organisational structure;
compare and contrast different patient workload allocation models;
identify and analyse health management skills in leadership and motivation;
compare modern trends in decision-making and problem-solving in management.

The subject will cover the following topics:

Section 1 Forming leadership management theory Leadership and Management, General Systems Theory, Change Theory, Adhocracy, Bureaucracy, Participatory Management, Management By Objectives, Theory X,Y,Z, Organic-Adaptive Theory. Section 2 Directing nursing management Strategic Planning, Decision Making, Problem Solving, Change, Committees, Leadership, Motivation, Communication, Management Information Systems and Conflict Management. Section 3 Performing nursing management Management, Staffing, Personnel, Budgeting, Nursing Delivery, Policy Making, Controlling, Quality Assurance and Staff Appraisal.
