Abstract:

This course outlines the differences between RPN and RN levels of nursing and explores the different levels of critical-thinking, responsibilities, entry to practise competencies, standards and role descriptions. The course explores the changing scope of practice in the role transition and the impact on the nurse.  Nursing concepts related to health and illness across the continuum of individual and family growth and development are examined.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  1. be able to understand and reflect upon the role change from RPN to RN.
  2. be able to explore nursing concepts and their influences on health and illness across the continuum.
  3. be able to describe the changing role of nursing practice and its influence on nursing care including nursing assessments.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

  1. Role transition - from RPN to RN.
  2. Nursing concepts basic to health and illness across the continuum.
  3. Changing the scope of practice.
  4. Acuity and complexity of patients.
