NRS301 Discipline of Nursing: Contexts of Nursing (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Nursing, Midwifery and Indigenous Health (NRMIH)

Abstract:

The context in which health care is provided occurs in a complex environment and is a product of history and contemporary social, political, cultural, environmental and legal factors. Students undertaking this course will explore the milieu in which nursing occurs, and their personal/professional self in the context of nursing practice.

The study of the discipline of nursing and ‘self’ within the discipline will involve a range of fundamental and essential generic skills directly related to the requisite competencies of the profession and the university. Students will thus, be introduced to these fundamental generic skills to support student engagement in the exploration and learning in this course and to facilitate engagement in lifelong learning and attainment of graduate and professional skills and attributes.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  1. be able to discuss and reflect upon the history of nursing and development of the discipline.
  2. be able to understand and reflect upon the discipline of nursing in a changing context.
  3. be able to demonstrate an understanding of how self impacts on and may be affected by nursing.
  4. be able to understand the principles that underpin the concepts of critical thinking and reflection, and the significance of these concepts to nursing
  5. be able to understand and apply the skills required to find and use evidence through research.
  6. be able to understand the roles and functions of the inter-professional health care team.
  7. be able to understand and apply, at a beginning level, the principles of formal academic writing.
  8.  be able to demonstrate a basic level of proficiency in prerequisite mathematical calculations for medication administration.
  9. be able to describe the frameworks and processes of professional and legal contexts of nursing.   
  10. be able to explore the influences of culture on nursing practice from an international perspective.
  11. be able to use technology to aid research and present information in a professional manner, consistent with organisational requirements.

The subject will cover the following topics:

1.       The profession of nursing in a changing context:

          (a)      History of the nursing profession

          (b)      Development of nursing as a discipline

          (c)      Models, theories and theorists

2.       Factors that influence the profession:

          (a)      Professional standards and practice - introduction of:

                   (i)       CNO Professional Standards

                   (ii)      CNO Entry to Practice Competencies

                   (iii)     CNO Standards of Ethics

          (b)      Evidence based practice

          (c)      Reflective practice

          (d)      Inter-professional health care issues

          (e)      The Canadian health care system

          (f)       International perspectives in nursing

3.       Self in the context of nursing practice:

          (a)      The personal self

                   (i)       Self-awareness and belief systems

                   (ii)      Theoretical underpinnings

          (b)      The professional self

                   (i)       Self care

                   (ii)      Development of self and the discipline of nursing

4.       Ways of knowing in nursing and nursing studies:

          (a)      Graduate and professional skills and attributes

                   (i)       Critical thinking

                   (ii)      Active inquiry and research utilisation

                   (iii)     Academic writing skills

                   (iv)     Numeracy and literacy

                   (v)      Technological literacy

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.

For distance education students this subject will have a five day residential school.
