Abstract:
This course accompanies the first of two theoretical courses that prepare students to care for people during health challenges in secondary health care settings. Students undertaking this course will undertake 160 hours clinical practice in a secondary health care setting in a supernumerary capacity under the supervision of an RN.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1. be able to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care for people experiencing health challenges and recovery with simple and complex is
2. be able to demonstrate the ability to care for people undergoing investigations: medical, pharmacological, surgical, psychological and other treatments.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
1. Administration of prescribed intravenous fluids and blood products:
(a) assist with cannula insertion
2. Administration of medications:
(a) oral
3. Nursing interventions and care of people with musculoskeletal dysfunction:
(a) assessment skills (eg. neurovascular observations, acute pain, deformity, range of movement, mobility)
(b) diagnostic tests (eg. x-ray)
4. Nursing interventions and care of people with integumentary dysfunction:
(a) assessment skills (eg. skin, wounds, burns)
5. Nursing interventions and care of people with respiratory dysfunction:
(a) assessment skills (eg. respirations, breath sounds, pulse oximetry, activity)
(d) respiratory therapy (eg. positioning, postural drainage, percussion, vibration, incentive spirometry, deep breathing and coughing)
(e) oropharyngeal suctioning
(f) oxygen/nebuliser therapy
(g) chest drain management
(h) rehabilitation
6. Nursing interventions and care of people with neurological dysfunction:
(a) assessment skills (eg. Glasgow coma scale, mini-mental status, cranial nerve assessment, sensation, movement)
(b) diagnostic tests (eg. lumbar puncture, EEG, CT scan)
(c) seizure management
(d) peri-operative care
(e) rehabilitation
7. Nursing interventions and care of people with special sensory dysfunction:
(a) assessment skills (eg. visual acuity, extraocular muscle function, pupillary responses, visual field, hearing acuity)
(b) diagnostic tests (eg. retinoscopy, fluorescein angiography, otoscopy, audiometry)
(c) peri-operative care
(d) rehabilitation
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.
For distance education students this subject will have a four day residential school.
