Abstract:
This subject encourages students to extend their
understanding of nursing sick children and adolescents in hospital and community settings within the context of primary health care and health promotion. Topics include normal growth and development of children and adolescents; and evaluating care of sick children and adolescents. An overview of immunisation is studied from the health promotion perspective.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Discuss the concepts of primary health care and health promotion and apply them to child and family health nursing.
Identify normal patterns of growth and development for infants, children and adolescents.
Identify and manage problems related to the hospitalisation of infants, children and adolescents.
Demonstrate a wide knowledge of common illnesses experienced by infants, children and adolescents.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate paediatric nursing cares.
Demonstrate a practical and theoretical knowledge base of drugs that are commonly prescribed for infants, children, and adolescents.
Develop nursing care plans that reflect assessment findings.
Discuss programs that are designed to support families and enhance infant, children and adolescent wellbeing, including the 'Families First', 'Paediatric Outreach' and 'NSW Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Strategy'
Outline the Department of Health protocols for immunisation.
Recognise infants, children and adolescents who are 'at risk'.
Identify community resources for families.
Recognise individuals who are at risk.
