Abstract:

This subject deals with the interaction of environment and families and how these can impact on the care and well being of children. It focuses on two specific environments - the family and child care institutions.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to describe the cultural diversity that is present in families and how this affects the health and care of children within those families;
demonstrate an understanding of the role of the family and how the family environment affects the health and care of children;
discuss the home environment and the way in which this will impact on the development, health and care of children;
analyse dynamics within families and the home environment and critically discuss their impact on the health of the child;
discuss options available for childcare;
demonstrate an awareness of issues such as quality care and accreditation of childcare facilities;
describe the needs of families when attempting to find childcare; and
critically analyse childcare options and services offered to children and families.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

The family, cultural and home environment and how these can have an impact on the care and well being of children (Module 1) Child care issues in Australia (or student's country of residence) and the role of this environment on the development, health and care of children (Module 2)
