Abstract:

This subject will focus on the acquisition of specialised nursing skills associated with cognitive behavioural and dialectial behavioural therapies used in mental health care. Students will apply these therapies to the care of people with mental health disorders in both simulated and healthcare settings. In addition, this subject will examine family approaches to care and motiviational interviewing in the context of mental health nursing.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* be able to apply mental health nursing knowledge and skill through the implementation of best practice in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with a range of clients and consumers;
* be able to analyse knowledge of the theory and practice of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy;
* be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of the concepts of Motivational Interviewing to professional mental health nursing practice;
* be able to critically evaluate knowledge of family approaches to care in the context of professional practice;
* be able to evaluate therapy and care according to professionally validated perspectives of the mental health nurse in the practice setting;
* be able to demonstrate application of mental health nursing competence in the domains of knowledge, skills, attitudes and practice outcomes.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: competences, problem-specific CBT skills, metacompetences and techniques; Dialetical Behavioural Therapy: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance; Motivational Interviewing: empathy, discrepency, resistence, self effacacy, committment; Family Approaches: communication theory, psycho-education, systems theory, reality theory; Contemporary perspectives on the nature of mental health nursing practice.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.

Following knowledge acquistion, students will undertake practical assessments for initial competence in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Students will undertake a CBT session with an actor and will be assessed on their ability to achieve identified milestones and targets. This will form the basis of the practical skill assessment strategies that will be evaluated in their place of work at the end of the semester.
