Abstract:

This subject will examine medication concordance and the specific mental health complexities associated with client adherence/non-adherence. Students will demonstrate the acquisition of contemporary mental health care assessment and implementation strategies to improve client adherence with medication therapies. Specific strategies such as concordance assessment, collaborative practice, reflective listening and discrepancy resistance, which are commonly used in a variety of mental health nursing settings will be explored.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* be able to analyse and apply mental health nursing knowedge and skills through the implementaion of best practice in Medication Concordance with a range of clients and consumers;

* be able to critically evaluate mental health nursing knowledge and skill through the use of tools such as Adherence Therapy Competence scales;

* be able to determine clinical practice on a professionally validated view of the mental health nurse in the practice setting;

* be able to demonstrate mental health nursing competence in the domains of knowledge, skill, attitudes and practice outcomes.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

* Concordance skills; evidence base, problems of non-adherence, moving from adherence to concordance, self medication (illness factors, treatment factors, cultural factors, environmental factors) * Improving treatment adherence, (foundation skills, process skills, key skills) * Concordance assessment rating * Medication effects rating scales (LUNSERS, Drug Attitude Inventory, KGV {modified} symptoms scale) * The implementaion of these concepts in the range of mental health nursing settings; acute in-patient, forensic, long stay, child and adolescent, elderly care and community setttings * Contemporary theoretical and clinical approaches to role of the mental health nurse

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.

The residential is required to support theoretical learning by enabling students to gain knowledge and skills associated with medication concordance in a simulated environment. Using a variety of case scenarios, suitably qualified and experienced mental health nurses will demonstrate assessment and implmentation of strategies to improve medication adherence. Students will be required to demonstrate initial competence in medication concordance.
