Abstract:
This subject will focus on currently accepted theories for explaining the process of mental illness and will form the basis for an integrated nursing approach to mental health care. The major theoretical underpinnings of this subject is based on Peplaus' Psychodynamic nursing theory. The sociological and political forces that have affected psychiatric nursing practice will be explored in order to understand current and future directions in mental health nursing.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* describe changing concepts of mental illness from a historical perspective
* analyse the sociological, political and ideological forces which have affected and continue to affect psychiatric nursing practice
* use an interactive nursing theoretical approach as the basis for planning client mental health care
* apply theoretical principles from psychology and sociology in the understanding of client needs and planning of interventions within a selected nursing theoretical framework
* analyse and respond appropriately to identified ethical and moral implications arising from the process of mental illness and the practice of psychiatric/mental health nursing
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
* Psychodynamic nursing theory in the context of mental health nursing eg. Peplau, Orlando, Travelbee. * An historical overview of sociological and political theories of power and authority in relation to psychiatric nursing. * An historical overview of sociological and political theories of power and authority in relation to clients with a mental health problem. * An historical overview of mental health treatment perspectives and the role played by psychiatric nurses in that process. * Theoretical principles and paradigms derived from psychology and sociology which can be harnessed within a psychodynamic nursing theoretical approach. * Ethical and moral issues implicated in psychiatric nursing practice.
