Abstract:
The student will be introduced to various theoretical perspectives in counselling with particular reference to the nursing context. Approaches to crisis intervention, trauma counselling, family therapy, bereavement counselling, and individual educational and supportive interventions will be examined.

Enrolment restrictions:
Master of Nursing students. Available to Associate students. It requires special approval from either course coordinator, subject coordinator, or head of teaching school as appropriate. Students must have access to a mental health clinical nursing area.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to
- describe the role of the nurse as a counsellor;
- explain and analyse the various theoretical perspectives in counselling;
- apply and translate the theoretical principles of counselling theory to meet the individual needs of your client;
- use of systematic approach during counselling sessions in order to use it as the basis for therapeutic communication;
- identify, discuss and critically comment upon some of the major counselling techniques used to enhance therapeutic counselling/communication skills;
- have an understanding of the ethical and professional issues inherent in the practice of counselling.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Historical perspectives of counselling Overview of the helping model On becoming a counsellor Macro and micro skills in counselling Theoretical approaches to counselling (e.g. humanistic, gestalt, rational emotive, cognitive, behavioural and analytical therapy) Practical application of the therapeutic counselling/communication skills in various psychiatric/psychological problems within a nursing context (i.e. suicide, anger management, crisis intervention, grief, depression etc.) Code of ethics in counselling
