Abstract:
This subject provides a framework for students to generalise information about such areas as cultural construction of health and illness, body and mind, body imagery, mind and illness, health care and person. It includes an exploration and application of theories of transcultural nursing. Policy influences on transcultural nursing services are examined.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Recognise that Australian, Canadian and New Zealand societies are characterised by diversity in ethnicity, language and culture.
Discuss the concept of culture and its importance.
Define health and illness in their social context.
Explore the interaction of health and ethnicity, language and culture.
Describe the inter-relationship between cultural practice and disease.
Analyse concepts of inequity and disadvantage in a cultural context.
Examine the influence of cultural factors on the development of the health care system and medical and nursing knowledge and practices.
Critically analyse transcultural theories and models.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1 Transcultural Nursing - what is it? Culture. Culture care theories Health beliefs, behaviours and values. Module 2 Cultural assessment. Ethics and transcultural care Immigrants' health Indigenous health Module 3 Aboriginal mental health issues with particular relevance to Aboriginal Australians, Indigenous Canadians, Maori people and South Pacific Islanders.
