Abstract:
This subject introduces students to concepts and issues faced by rural practitioners. Factors which impact on the practice of the rural health workforce include the health of rural communities, government and private initiatives, and specific populations at risk are explored.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
define rurality;
explain the concepts of community, community organisation and community development;
identify the role and the practice of rural health professionals;
recognise the differences between rural and metropolitan communities;
differentiate between primary health care and primary care;
identify the issues which influence the practice of rural health professionals;
identify factors and issues which influence the health of rural health communities;
identify and describe vulnerable rural populations; and
develop strategies to promote sustainable, ecological development of healthy rural communities.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1: Identifying the practice setting defining rural rural health services Module 2: The process of rural health practice the practice of health professional in rural areas discipline specific practice issues collaborative partnerships preparing health practitioners for rural practice legal aspects of practice safety models for practice Module 3: Meeting the needs of rural communities vulnerable groups in rural communities critical analysis
