NUT421 Nutrition and Dietetics Residency (16)

Abstract:
This a 100% clinically based subject, which has a practicum consisting of two blocks of 5 week clinical placement in two separate locations. This practicum is where students are required to gain experience in the management of clinical cases. They will be expected, under collaborative supervision, to develop skills and abilities in client assessment and diagnostic decision making, care planning, implementation and evaluation. Students will also be required to demonstrate the achievement of entry level professional and clinical competence as defined by the 2009 Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) entry level competency, as assessed by the Accredited Practicing Dietitian supervising the placement.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- achieve entry level competency for dietitians relating to clinical practice
- be able to demonstrate the application of sufficient underlying knowledge to ensure safe practice
- be able to utilise effective and appropriate communication skills in the context of clinical practice
- be able to collect, organise and assess data relating to the individual's nutritional status
- be able to implement a client centered approach to nutrition care for individuals
- be able to manage workload and complete tasks within required time frames
- be able to practice safely
- be able to implement a professional and ethical approach to excellence in clinical nutrition and dietetics
- be able to integrate research and evaluation principles into practice
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- the application of evidence based guidelines in dietetic practice
- communication in clinical practice
- nutritional assessments
- interpretation and analysis of assessment findings
- nutrition diagnosis
- development of a nutritional care plan
- implementation of nutrition intervention strategies
- case management
- evaluating and monitoring the effectiveness of nutrition interventions
- principles of professional practice
