OCC103 Communication for Occupational Therapy Practice (8)

Abstract:

This subject develops written and oral communication skills with an emphasis on the language of health professions. Specific occupational therapy communication tasks and skills are addressed including writing treatment plans and reports and communicating with people who have communication difficulties or use assisted communication. A component of the subject includes 75 hours of supervised occupational therapy fieldwork.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to:
- identify areas of strength in their communication skills;
- identify areas for development and improvement of their communication skills;
- develop strategies for developing and improving their communication skills;
- identify and implement techniques for enhancing communication;
- identify and implement techniques used in communicating with a broad range of people, including clients, families and carers of clients and other health professionals;
- demonstrate rudimentary skills in counselling and interviewing; and
- develop and implement strategies for delivering effective oral presentations and written documentation

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- listening skills - assertiveness - presentation skills - report and submission writing - therapeutic relationships - counselling skills - language barriers - using interpreters - occupational therapy practicum
