OCC405 Applying Knowledge in Occupational Therapy (8)
CSU Discipline Area: Allied Health (ALHEA)
Duration: One session
Abstract:
Drawing upon the students' understanding of the epistemology of knowledge, principles of research and their ability to discriminate between different research approaches, this subject will focus on the relationship of research to practice, programs and policy, and in particular, the practical application of evidence-based practice. We will critically examine evidence-based practice within the field of occupational therapy. It is anticipated that this subject will assist students in developing a strong evaluative orientation to their practice. Students will complete a literature review as the major part of your assessment focusing on developing guidelines for an area of practice based on evidence. Finally students will be required to write a quantitative and a qualitative research proposal.
To engage in this subject effectively, students should be able to critique the complexities of occupational therapy practice in context; implement well reasoned and appropriate enabling strategies; evaluate the effectiveness of the enabling strategies programs; critique the provision of occupational therapy services and suggest potential ways to develop practice; discuss the epistemology of knowledge, demonstrating an understanding of knowledge construction; critically evaluate and comment on occupational therapy assumptions and practice; outline basic methodological features of research along the continuum; and identify a number of key ethical considerations in the conduct of research.
