Abstract:

This subject is designed to introduce the student to the practice and profession of paramedicine. The aim of the subject is to make paramedic students aware of the profession they will be entering by presenting the past, present, and future of paramedic practice both nationally and internationally. This subject will explore professional attributes required to be a paramedic and the role of the paramedic in the broader health and public safety systems.

Enrolment in this subject is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic)

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to discuss the history and development of paramedic services on both a national and international level;
be able to identify and describe the structure and functions of modern paramedic system;
be able to explain the role of the paramedics in the context of working in a multidisciplinary and integrated health care team;
be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the professional role of the paramedic which includes the moral, ethical, legal, social, economic, and political implications of providing patient care in the community;
be able to demonstrate an appreciation of and a commitment to self directed professional development and life-long learning.

Paramedic education, national registration, and professional practice standards
Paramedics as part of the health care system
