Abstract:
Students in this subject are encouraged to reflect on the importance of research to the discipline of paramedic care. Attention is given to exploring different methods and techniques that can be used for conducting research. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of statistical techniques and the analysis of data within paramedic research.

Available only to students enrolled in Diploma / Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) or Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) courses
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- perceive undertaking research in the field of paramedical care as required to develop a discipline-specific knowledge base;
- appreciate the diversity of concepts of research that paramedics may hold;
- have an awareness of ethical issues inherent in the research process;
- have a critical appreciation of various methods used to conduct paramedical research;
- have an understanding of the principal statistical methods used in the research process;
- have the ability to interpret research data as published in refereed paramedic journals.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- social research versus the scientific method; research design, methods and strategies; eg. historical, case study, experimental; ethics in research; - instrumentation and measurement; eg. survey, questionnaire, interview; reliability and validity; sensitivity and specificity; - statistical techniques and the analysis of data; mean, medium, mode; probability, p. values; confidence intervals.
