Abstract:

This subject encompasses an examination of the philosophical perspectives which have influenced the development of the paramedic epistemology, research and theory. The subject also includes an exploration of the concept of generating theory from practice.

Enrolment restrictions:

Restricted to students enrolled in the Postgraduate Certificate in EMS Leadership & Management, the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Practice (Paramedic), and the Postgraduate Certificate in Intensive Care Paramedic Studies.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  1. Develop the necessary skills to critically evaluate published research to determine its relevance to paramedic practice; 
  2. Be able to examine and critically analyse current developments in paramedic practice, including the professionalisation of the discipline; 
  3. Be able to articulate the philosophical underpinnings of paradigms in the discipline of paramedicine;
  4. Compare and contrast philosophical and epistemological assumptions in the discipline of paramedicine;
  5. Critically analyse and evaluate the concept of generating theory from practice; and
  6. Demonstrate an appreciation of the contribution of borrowed perspectives toward the development of paramedic knowledge.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

  1. Evolution of paramedicine as a discipline;
  2. Professional identity and leadership;
  3. Paramedic philosophy and epistemiology;
  4. Examination of research paradigms and implications for research methodology; and
  5. Generating theory from practice.
