Duration: Two sessions

Abstract:

This subject deals with central topics in metaphysics and epistemology, including the mind-body problem, the problem of free will and determinism, whether there is a god, the relation between language and the world, the nature of knowledge and of how such knowledge is possible, the question of realism versus idealism, to name some. It will proceed by way of engagement with influential texts by classical and contemporary philosophers.

Students may enrol in this subject only if they gain admission into the BA (Hons) in philosophy. Students will need access to the internet.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate a familiarity with current developments in the area of philosophy covered
- be able to distinguish the main current theoretical responses to current problems in metaphysics and epistemology
- be able to make use of theories and concepts studied in the subject
- be able to demonstrate the analytic skills necessary to engage with the intellectual materials at this level

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

A selection from: - The mind-body problem - The problem of free will and determinism - God's existence - The relation between language and the world - The nature of knowledge and of how such knowledge is possible - Realism versus idealism - Personal identity - Natural kinds - Causation - Truth - Perception - Space and Time - Action Students will write four essays and therefore will cover four of these topics in depth.
