Abstract:
This subject will provide an in-depth understanding of some central issues and debates in theoretical and applied ethics. The subject explores what is fundamentally characteristic of, and at issue between, consequentialist, deontic and agent-based ethical theories. Various practical and applied implications of the ideas and values that underpin and motivate our different ethical views are examined in detail.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an advanced understanding of what characterises and contrasts our major ethical theories
- be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the theoretical landscape in normative ethics
- have a well-developed understanding of core ideas and values that ground or arise from our ethical theorising and practice
- be able to assess and apply different and conflicting ethical claims in practical affairs
- have developed a good theoretical understanding of the different and conflicting views about the nature of ethical reasons
- be well prepared for further study in philosophical ethics
