Abstract:
This subject falls within the pharmacy discipline known as Pharmacy Practice which is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and peak pharmacy bodies within Australia and globally as being concerned with the roles of pharmacists, including expanding and developing roles, and the skills, knowledge and behaviours consistent with those roles. Professional Practice 1 provides learning opportunities for development of the necessary skills and abilities required of all practising pharmacists in Australia and for the development of the appropriate professional philosophy.
Students studying this subject are assumed to have completed the first three years of the standard enrolment pattern as this knowledge is a critical success factor in achieving professional milestones which are necessary to pass this subject.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to practise legally and to accepted standards
- Be able to deliver quality and safe patient-centred care as a beginning practitioner
- Be able to identify, analyse and work effectively to solve practice-relevant issues
- Be able to constructively collaborate with others and manage conflict
- Be able to reflect on the role, practice and professional identity of the pharmacist to develop and maintain competence
- Be able to participate in and develop processes to provide a safe and secure workplace by managing pharmacy resources
- Be able to review and supply medicines for safety and appropriateness
- Be able to deliver primary and preventative health care appropriate for condition management
- Be able to research, critically analyse and synthesise information appropriate for a range of audiences
- Be able to evaluate information and articulate the decision-making process for condition management
- Be able to communicate effectively and professionally with stakeholders and deliver considered and clear professional decisions, information or opinions as a beginning practitioner
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- The syllabus will cover the following topics: - chronic disease state management; pharmacist professional services;ethical or legal dilemmas concentrating on the following body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal and renal plus some enabling topics such as the influence of age and gender on disease states and management.
- In addition the application of State and Federal Acts and Regulations relevant to pharmacy; professional written and verbal communication skills; patient/client assessment, patient education; maintenance of patient/client records, informed consent and confidentiality; and computerised dispensing practice will be addressed.
