PHM511 Advanced Topics in Pharmacy (Specialisation) (16)

Abstract:
This subject introduces the student to a minimum of eight (8) topics in the area of specialisation. The topics should be different from, but complementary to, the title of the research project. These topics will provide the necessary background information to help the student to conduct research in the area of specialisation and expose the student to the recent advances in the area of specialisation. The student and the supervisory team will come up with a list of proposed topics (8 topics minimum). The list of topics will be submitted for the Master of Pharmacy course coordinating committee for approval and recommendations.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of theoretical and experimental aspects of the studied topics.

be able to evaluate the clinical and theoretical knowledge and identify its potential for application to research or practical use.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Eight topics will be selected from within ONE of the following specialisations:
1- Clinical Pharmacy
2- Hospital Pharmacy
3- Rural Pharmacy
4- Pharmacology and Therapeutics
5- Pharmaceutical Technology
6- Medicinal Chemistry
7- Complementary and Alternative Medicine
8- Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology
From the background study undertaken above, the candidiate will develop a literature review in support of a research proposal. This will be suitable for publication and will also be used in association with the research proposal and ethics application below.
A research proposal in the University's standard format will be developed and presented internally for peer-review. It will then be submitted to the Centre for Research and Graduate Training for approval. If appropriate an ethics application will accompany this proposal.
