Abstract:

This subject will further develop students skills in physiotherapy practice with emphasis on developing and integrating students skills in musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice. Specific learning objectives relating to health promotion, professional values, culture and ethical responsibilities in practice will be embedded in the subject. Students will develop early skills in evidence based physiotherapy which include concepts of measurement, using the ICF framework for evaluation of outcomes, locating and retrieving library resources. Concepts of mental well being will be examined as they apply to health professionals and the people they work with. Students completing this subject will complete two clinical placement experiences where students will apply and integrate the principles learnt in this subject. Students enrolling in this subject will be assumed to have a foundational level of knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and physiotherapy practice.

This subject is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to:
-Demonstrate an ability to integrate and apply physiotherapy knowledge and skills from musculoskeletal practice to a range of clients in practice settings.
-Apply knowledge to a range of musculoskeletal cases that focus on clinical reasoning and decision making
-Safely and effectively assess and apply physiotherapy intervention to the management of mobility impairment for clients to improve their health and well being.
-Communicate effectively with clients
-Demonstrate effective communication skills for a team approach to a clients care with an emphasis on goal setting.
- Prepare and provide documentation according to legal and ethical requirements and accepted procedures and standards.
- Demonstrate professional behaviour appropriate to physiotherapy.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

-Comprehensive client management approaches including collaboration and goal setting
-Self-assessment of scope of practice and referral of clients to other health professional as required
-Applied anatomy, applied biomechanics, physiology (especially pain), social and psychological factors influencing musculoskeletal and responses to illness and pain
-The use of evidence-based practice to support decision making
-Inter-professional collaboration
-Clinical reasoning for musculoskeletal conditions and their management
-Aquatic Physiotherapy
-Integration of musculoskeletal physiotherapy approaches with a holistic approach to health and mobility
-Ethical and professional practice as relevant to clinical practice
-Self-assessment and reflection on own practice and development of attributes
-Communication skills in documenting client notes and communicating with other health professionals
-Rural and indigenous health issues
-Disability and community living for those with a musculoskeletal impairment
