Abstract:
This subject will extend students learning of physiotherapy practice from a level of competency in core areas of physiotherapy practice to integrate knowledge in more specialist areas of physiotherapy. Students will learn advanced knowledge and skills in cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal and neurological physiotherapy. Students will achieve specific learning objectives in specialist topics including spinal cord injury, lymphoedema, womens health, burns, sports physiotherapy, manipulation, occupational health, vestibular disorders and critical care. Students enrolling in this subject will be expected to have significant knowledge and clinical experience in the core areas of physiotherapy practice.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to:
- Identify learning needs with regard to additional levels of competency required to practice in specialist areas of physiotherapy practice;
- Operate within own role, responsbilities and limitations;
- Integrate knowledge from core and specialist areas of physiotherapy practice to determine management approaches for clients, carers, families and communities with multiple and complex problems;
- Identify, evaluate and apply relevant information resources and evidence based practice to effectively manage complex clients;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of other health care professionals and identify possible referring bodies in the management of more complex clients;
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and clients regarding more complex clients.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Advanced clinical reasoning skills in cardiopulmonary (including critical care), musculoskeletal and neurological physiotherapy; - spinal cord injury; - lymphoedema; - womens health; - burns; - sports physiotherapy; - manipulation; occupational health; - vestibular disorders; -complex case management - the role of all members of the health care team, government and non-government community organizations, in the management of complex clinical cases - researching and evaluating clinical based evidence and networking resources
