PKM208 An Introduction to Outdoor Recreation and Adventure Tourism (8)

Abstract:

This foundation subject introduces students to concepts of outdoor recreation and adventure tourism. Students will learn about the differences between leisure, recreation and tourism, and examine the history and role of outdoor recreation and adventure tourism in our culture. They will also examine the structure and organisation, and current demand and trends in outdoor recreation and adventure tourism. These topics are discussed within relevant theoretical frameworks, providing students with a broad understanding to enable further study in adventure tourism and outdoor recreation. The subject contains a total estimated workload of 160 hours.

The subject will cover the following topics:

  1. The  definition of leisure, recreation and tourism;
  2. The structure and development of the tourism industry; 
  3. The tourism system, demand and supply factors, in relation to outdoor experiences;
  4. Sectors within the tourism industry and special context of adventure tourism;
  5. The history of outdoor and adventure tourism;
  6. The growth and development of visitation to the  environment and current  patterns and trends that have been established;
  7. The role of outdoor experiences at the individual person level that influence individual choice and overall demand and satisfaction in going outdoors;
  8. The role of government and the private sector in the providing these experiences and how they interact; and
  9. The implications of encouraging adventure tourism on society and the environment
