Abstract:
What is the best way to get your message across to your visitors? Interpretive Planning looks at the important role of communication planning and in particular interpretation in protected area management and ecotourism operations. The subject looks at the theory and practice of public communication planning for heritage agencies and ecotourism operations. The main issues covered include identification of the audience, the use of media and the preparation of an interpretation plan. The subject contains a total estimated workload of 160 hours.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to:
- describe communication theory;
- explain the decision-making processes of visitors to nature-based recreation areas as a foundation for the planning of interpretation programs;
- describe the role of interpretation in park management and ecotourism;
- develop and demonstrate a working knowledge of interpretive planning principles and techniques;
- demonstrate practical skills in the preparation of a range of media used by heritage managers and ecotourism operators in interpretation programs; and
- evaluate interpretive programs and communication media.
