Abstract:

Indigenous peoples have a long history of caring for country in ways that were sustainable. By contrast, dramatic changes to the Australian environment have occurred since European people came to this country.   Governments, land holders and other groups are seeking and using Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) for sustainable use of Australia's natural resources.This subject explores some aspects of TEK and their application to environmental management.

The subject will cover the following topics:

  1. Sustainable land management practices: definitions, comparisons between Indigenous and non-Indigenous management and issues involved in sustainable land management and partnerships in caring for country
  2. Native Title: origins of land rights, Native Title Act and subsequent amendments, political issues, partnerships with National Parks and Land Use Agreements
  3. Cultural heritage protection: definitions, conservation and protection
