Abstract:

This subject reviews and extends the students knowledge of a broad range of topics including pain; rheumatology and musculoskeletal pathology. Students review acute and chronic pain, pain assessment, and the impact of pain on functional ability.
The study of rheumatology illustrates a spectrum of conditions ranging from pathology characterised by arthropathy, to soft tissue rheumatological conditions. Musculoskeletal pathology involving the lower limb is studied in detail, and analysis of a range of management strategies is incorporated.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to:

evaluate pain as a presenting symptom, in the formulation of a differential diagnosis;

analyse the impact of pain on functional ability;

analyse the aetiology, pathology, clinical presentation, management and prognosis of a range of rheumatological diseases;

evaluate the aetiology, pathology, clinical presentation, management and prognosis of a range of musculoskeletal pathologies arising in the foot and leg; and

develop a problem based approach to learning, to facilitate the application of theory to practice.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Pain: Assessment and management of acute and chronic pain Rheumatology: Including Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Spondyloarthropathies, Gout, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Fibromyalgia, Systemic Sclerosis and CREST and other disease processes Musculoskeletal pathology: Forefoot; digital deformities, 1st ray pathology, soft tissue pathology, metatarsalgia, fractures and other conditions Midfoot; sprains and strains, joint subluxations and dislocations, fractures and other conditions Rearfoot; plantar fasciitis, heel pain, sinus tarsii syndrome, fractures and other conditions Ankle and leg; ankle sprains, posterior ankle impingement, medial tibial stress syndrome, compartment syndrome, stress fractures and other conditions
