Abstract:

Areas of study in this subject include neurological pathology and mental health, vascular pathology with a special emphasis on peripheral vascular disease. Consideration will be given to the impact of these diseases on the individual, their well being, mobility and independence.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to:

critically evaluate the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of clients with conditions including:

a) vascular pathologies (arterial, venous, lymphatic and vasomotor); and
b) neurological pathologies (central, peripheral and neuromuscular);

evaluate the clinical presentation of and discuss strategies for managing, a range of mental health disorders;

explain the physical, emotional and social impact of vascular pathology/neurological pathologies and mental health issues on the client, carers, family and society;

describe the pharmacology, clinical use, adverse effects and drug interactions related to the drugs commonly used to manage mental health disorders, neurological and vascular pathology;

evaluate the implications of these conditions for the assessment and management of podiatric clients; and

analyse the role of the podiatrist in promoting mobility and maintaining independence.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Vascular disorders : arterial, venous, lymphatic, oedema, vasomotor, small vessel disease Neurology - peripheral, central, neuromuscular condition, acquired/traumatic neuropathology, degenerative disorders associated with ageing Issues in psychopathology - mental health and disorders (anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, psychosis) co-morbidities (drug/alcohol dependence) Health promotion, minimising harmful behaviours (alcohol, smoking, substance abuse, unsafe sexual behaviours, etc.) maximising nutrition, promoting mobility and independence, understanding the interdisciplinary health care approach Identifying clients at risk of falling - creating a safe environment to minimise falls, including the significance of footwear and foot health, promoting mobility and independence through podiatric intervention
