POD403 Clinical Podiatric Residency (16)

Duration: Two sessions

Abstract:

This is a clinically based subject where students are required to gain experience in the management and treatment of clinical cases. They will be expected, under collaborative supervision, to refine their skills and abilities in patient assessment, diagnostic decision-making and treatment, and preventative and palliative methods and procedures. Students will also be required to demonstrate the emergence of entry level professional and clinical competence. Students will complete a 70 hour transition to residency clinical placement followed by three 8-week blocks of clinical placement . Each week will consist of 22.5 hours of clinical placement. The placement program will conclude with an additional consolidation placement of 50 hours to provide a total of 660 hours of placement for the subject.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to:

demonstrate an ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for clients experiencing problems with their lower extremity;

utilise clinical decision making, analytical and reasoning skills to deal with a range of podiatric situations;

articulate and justify their assessment, diagnostic and management decisions;

demonstrate all of the competencies of an entry level podiatrist according to the Australian Podiatry Council Competency Standards for the Australian Podiatry Profession;

practice professional podiatry that is culturally safe, holistic and which maintains personal and client integrity;

demonstrate an ability to utilise principles of reflective practice to address self-learning needs;

demonstrate strategies for managing podiatry workload and time appropriately; and

demonstrate collaborative and leadership skills to function effectively as part of a health care team.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

This is a clinical subject. The student is transitioning from a dependent to an independent practitioner with a full scope of podiatric practice. Students will consolidate their critical thinking, with a continued approach to safe and appropriate practice. Students will recognise all facets affecting clients and their management. Students will also demonstrate ability in managing clients with complex pathology/needs in a holistic manner. The skills and knowledge acquired in previous and concurrent theoretical studies will be applied in their clinical practice. Students will be expected to demonstrate professional skills including time management, consistent with an entry-level practitioner. Students will participate in a range of clinical settings, developing themselves as entry level practitioners, in a supportive environment. Students will also be required to demonstrate the emergence of entry level professional and clinical competence. Students will complete a 2 week (70 hour) transition to residency clinical placement at the start of the year followed by three 8-week blocks of clinical placement. Each week will consist of 22.5 hours of clinical placement. The placement program will conclude with an additional consolidation placement of 50 hours. The placements will be based in the Allied Health Clinic, in a community health setting and a high risk foot clinic. Allied Health Clinic placement: focus on managing the private client, as an independent practitioner incorporating: Biomechanical/sports/paediatric clients, High risk in the private setting, Marketing and business management, cutaneous surgery, the use of electrophysical agents. Community Health: Focus on public sector practice, Health promotion, Multidisciplinary team approach in the community, Service provision, Health sector administration. High Risk Foot Clinic: Focus on management of the high risk foot, Chronic wound management, Multidisciplinary team approach for the hospital setting, managing inpatients, managing outpatients. The following topics will be further explored in this subject.
