Abstract:
This subject provides students with a detailed understanding of common diseases and conditions associated with childhood and adolescence, with a focus on the lower extremity. It equips students with foundation knowledge of child development from preconception to adolescence. In conjunction with the students previous clinical knowledge, on completion of this subject the student will be able to work with children, young persons and their families, as part of a multidisciplinary team, to enhance mobility and independence.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Upon completion of this subject, the student should be able to demonstrate the following attributes, with specific reference to the lower limb and related structures:
describe the normal development from preconception to adolescents;
describe the biological principles of genetics and disorders of inheritance;
describe the presentation and management of common medical conditions of childhood/adolescence;
discuss in detail the diagnosis and management of specified structural and functional disorders/conditions associated with childhood/adolescence that can affect the lower extremity;
demonstrate skills in interaction /examination of the neonate, prewalker, child and adolescent;
describe the effect of pregnancy on maternal health and locomotion; and
recognize the role and potential for podiatry in the interdisciplinary paediatric team.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Physical, cognitive and emotional social developmental milestones: preconception to adolescence Interaction, history-taking and physical examination of children and adolescents Psychological considerations when treating children and adolescents Assessment of paediatric gait Paediatric Footwear General disease and conditions that commonly affect children and adolescents Neuromuscular conditions that emerge/start in childhood including the aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic tests, general and podiatric management Rheumatic conditions of childhood and adolescence, including the aetiology and clinical presentation, diagnostic tests, general and podiatric management Chromosomal disorders (genetic) including the specific aetiology and clinical presentation, diagnostic tests, general and podiatric management Childhood injuries including diagnosis and management of sports injuries and fractures Musculoskeletal disorders affecting children such as Talipes, metatarsus adductus, osteochondritis, Aetiology and clinical presentation, Diagnostic tests, General and podiatric management Frontal plane conditions of the lower limb, Aetiology and clinical presentation, Diagnostic tests, General and podiatric management Pregnancy: prenatal development from conception to postnatal with discussion on specific issues arising throughout this period for both mother and unborn child Health promotion: effective health promotion targeted for children and adolescents covering a range of current public health issues Mandatory reporting/legal issues in dealing with children
