Abstract:
The subject has two key aspects: Firstly, it will focus upon the compilation of briefs of evidence. Students will learn to obtain statements, develop fact sheets and prepare briefs of evidence, in order to give evidence in a mock court situation. Secondly, the subject will further develop key communication strategies. Students will identify communication issues specific to particular groups and policing situations. In doing so, students will apply a reflective approach in order to extend and improve their communication practices.

- Describe the procedures required for presenting evidence in court.
- Recognise, collect and preserve evidence taking into account legal considerations.
- Complete statements and compile briefs of evidence for presentation at mock court.
- Give evidence in a mock court situation.
- Identify, apply and evaluate effective communication strategies in a number of common policing situations.
- Identify barriers to effective communication in a number of common policing situations, and develop strategies to overcome those barriers.
- Develop and apply an effective model of conflict resolution.
- Identify and use key forms of written communication in the police workplace (COPS, CIDS, fact sheets).
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:

Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.
The duration of the Residential School is 12 hours to be held in conjunction with residential periods for other concurrent subjects
