PPP231 Session 3 Policing Practice (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Policing, law enforcement & emergency management (POLEM)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

The student engages in operational policing practice under close supervision by a Field Teaching Officer and Supervisor for 14 weeks and covers 6 core areas of policing. These are:

1. motor vehicle accidents, prescribed concentration of alcohol and driving offences
2. larceny and offences akin, motor vehicle theft, property damage
3. licensing, alcohol related matters, street offences, drugs
4. assaults and domestic violence
5. service provision, proactive policing strategies
6. COPS, initial response duties and officer safety.

The student applies theory to practice, demonstrates integrity, shows a positive attitude and demeanour to members of the public, communicates clearly verbally and in writing and responds immediately to protect members of the community and colleagues. Additionally, the student will continue their studies of brief preparation, with a view to preparing a brief of evidence for presentation in court in Session 5.

The subject will cover the following topics:

. shift preparation - preparing oneself for duty . shift preparation - vehicle safety and condition . undertaking patrols . operational safety . responding to incidents . communication - verbal . information - gathering, collating and recording . managing individual workload . components of a brief of evidence, and relevant procedures The subject utilises the competencies from the Diploma of Public Safety (Policing) as indicators of performance.
